The General Idea
Most of the Pay-per-Click programs work as follows,

  • You create your page title, description and link as you would like it to appear in the results.
  • You then enter the Keywords & Phrase that you would like your listing to appear for.
  • You then enter an amount you are willing to pay each time a user clicks on your listing. This is known as your keyword bid.
  • Your keyword bid is then compared with other listings who are bidding for this keyword or phrase and the results are returned to the user with highest bid appearing first.

Simply divide your net profit by your visitor to sale ratio and this gives you a rough figure of the Maximum You can Bid and Still be in Profit. For example lets say you sell a product for $50 a time and your net profit is $20 per sale. Let's also say that you tend to make a sale for every 200 visitors. Then the Maximum you can bid for this page would be,

$20 / 200 = $0.10

This is only a guide figure and there are other factors which are going to come into play. For instance it may be that quality of visitors you get from the search result will be higher which in turn alters your visitor to sale ratio ( i.e.. it may change to 100 ).However at first it is best to play safe and start with a low figure, monitor the results and then re-asses. For this reason I recommend that you should Half the Maximum Bid figure calculated above. So in our example your maximum bid ( to start with ) would be only $0.05.

But wait, I hear say "This product is only designed to pull people in, I make my real profit from backend products that I sell to customers later". That's all well and good and a very valid point. Yes, of course you need to take this into account and indeed if this is your situation then you need to factor this in and possibly increase your maximum bid figure. But in order to do this you should base all your calculations on Established Fact. e.g.

  • How many customers do you manage to repeat sell to ?
  • How many Visitors to your first page go on to visit your other product pages ?

You can only sensible answer these questions and hence make sure your business runs in Profit by Accurately Monitoring your Visitors across all Your Sites Pages.

I have seen (and you will too) some listings paying several dollars for each click through, well I don't know what they are selling on the backend but it must be pretty damn good to be still making a profit.
