Do you know which Search Term (keywords and phrases) people are entering into Search Engines ? Ever wondered how many people search for a particular Keyword or Phrase ? Well you are about to find out and getting this step right is the key to your success. Firstly, think about your Product, Service or Subject and ask yourself what you would type into a search engine if you were looking for this. On your plan write down this search term under the "Keywords and Phrases" section. The next step is to find how many people are actually entering this keyword or phrase into the Search Engines. We know of 3 ways to do this, so read through them all and then decide what's best for you ( we actually use all 3 just to be sure ). The Completely Free Way. This method may seem a little crude, but it does work and it's free. It relies on the fact that your competition is already targeting the prime keywords and phrases for your product. The Almost Free Way. With the advent of Pay per Click search Engine programs came another method. This goes right to the heart of the beast and takes all the guesswork ( and a lot of leg work ) out of the process. Search Term Analysis - The Almost Free Way, Read here.

As we said at the top of this page, this step is so important that we make use of all three of these methods when compiling our list of keywords and phrases. It's vital to get this list right because all the Hard Work to come is based upon it ! Final Words and a couple of Warnings. There are several sites out there that believe in not necessarily targeting the most popular keywords because there is already too much competition from them. ( some even give you mathematical formula's for working out popularity Vs competition ). Not sure whether they truly believe what they are saying or just don't want people getting in on the Hot Action. However we believe the Search Engine Ranking process to be a level playing field and with time and practice there is no reason why you can't achieve a Good if not Top ranking on the most popular phrases. Don't be put off going for the "Big Play" just because everyone else is. If everybody is going for a particular market there is usually a reason for it and that reason is usually Money. Similar to the last point, many sites recommend looking for an unexploited 'niche'. We have had the Internet Gold Rush, there are nearly 1 Billion Sites out there - how many more unexploited 'niches' can there be ? Your product is what it is - make the most of it, Don't skirt around the edge looking for a way in, Kick the Front Door down and get in there ! Don't be tempted to 'Bend your Product' to fit the most popular keywords. If you discover a more popular keyword that doesn't quite fit your Product, then don't use it. Why ? Because all you will end up doing is driving people to your site who aren't really looking for your product. Remember the whole point of this exercise is to bring people who want your product.
Some people advise targeting misspellings of popular keywords. This we feel to be a Red Herring. Try it for yourself, in the tools described above, type in some misspellings and see just how few people really can't type or spell.
