Terms & Terminology. Visits or Hits ?
Most of the reports give two figures, - the number of Hits
- and the number of Visitors.
A person may look at your page 3 times via clicking back and forth through your site. This would be counted as 1 Visitor to your page and 3 Hits. Note : If you are familiar with the term 'Page View' then when we talk about Hits you can take this to mean 'Page Views'. Page Views
Many other sites on the web talk about 'Page Views'. Within the TrafficFile system 'Page View' is identical to 'Hit'.
( In other systems Hits are not the same as Page Views ) Browser
Piece of Software used to display Internet Pages. e.g.. Internet Explorer, Netscape. OS ( Operating System )
Bit difficult to describe in layman's terms, but it's the suite of programs which 'manage' your computer and all it's devices ( drives, printers etc. )
Most of you will be using a Windows OS
( e.g.. Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 (ME), Windows XP etc. ) Screen Resolution
This is a measure of Screen size, not 15" / 17", but rather the size in pixels ( 'dots' ).
e.g.. 1024 * 768 Java
This is a programming language that many Web Page Components are written in. Components written in this language can be understood by most browsers.
( e.g.. Page Menu's ) JavaScript
Similar to Java, provides the ability to add more sophisticated functionality to a web page. Again most browsers will be able to operate these. Cookies
An interesting name, but really all they are just 'little notes' that your browser keeps about web pages.
For instance if a web site wishes to know whether you have visited before, upon your first visit it will ask your browser to make a little note that you have visited. i.e.. A Cookie is written to your browser.
When you visit a second time the web site is then able to check for this Cookie or 'little note'. ( Contrary to popular belief Cookies are not Programs and cannot contain viruses, they are simply letters and numbers ) |
