1 overpass reopens over Route 22 near Route 33 in Northampton County

One road over Route 22 near Route 33 in Northampton County has reopened, just in time for the busy Memorial Day travel weekend.

Bethman Road over Route 22, near the Charles Chrin Community Center, reopened Friday to traffic, Bethlehem Township police said.

The $3.5 million preventative maintenance project on the bridge is estimated to be complete in October, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The reopening eases some of the congestion in the area due to two bridge projects flanking the Route 33 interchange and an extensive resurfacing project.

PennDOT is spending $16 million to resurface Bethman Road and Route 22 in that area, with resurfacing work on the highway already begun and snarling traffic at times.

Meanwhile, work continues replacing the nearby Country Club Road bridge over Route 22 in the township.

Construction on that $4.5 million project began this past March and is slated to be done late next year.
