43rd Street Neighbors Are Getting A Cul-De-Sac To Prevent Traffic Concerns Ahead Of Pedestrian Bridge

OAKLAND — A cul-de-sac is coming to Oakland in hopes of preventing traffic problems.

The cul-de-sac will be installed at 43rd Street and Oakenwald Avenue and should be completed by spring, said Erica Schroeder, director of public information for Chicago Department of Transportation.

Officials, including Ald. Sophia King (4th) hope the cul-de-sac will mitigate speeding and other possible traffic impacts that might come with the 43rd Street and Oakenwald pedestrian bridge, which is under construction.

Butler said the cost of the installation is $218,000. Plans for the cul-de-sac were shared with residents in 2020 and 2021.

The 43rd Street pedestrian bridge will be similar in design to the 41st Street bridge, which was completed in 2018. Neighbors near the latter bridge have long complained about unruly visitors playing loud music and setting off fireworks and motorcycle gangs illegally driving across the bridge. A gate was installed at the bridge’s entrance in November.
