Boxing Day traffic disrupted near Leicester after multiple-vehicle collision on M1 causes long delays

The accident took place between junction 21a at Kirby Muxloe and junction 21 at Fosse Park of the M1, near Leicester Forest East services. There was a four-mile-long queue on the southbound side up to junction 22.

Shortly after the collision, a National Highways spokesperson posted on Twitter that one of the four lanes was closed on the M1 southbound in Leicestershire between J21a and J21 due to the multi-vehicle collision. He also mentioned that recovery was arranged. However, there was a 30-minute delay on approach due to 4.5 miles of congestion.

Reportedly, there was also some traffic queuing on the southbound A50. It might have been due to drivers using navigation software to find an alternative route to their Boxing Day lunches with family.

Despite moving all the vehicles allowing all lanes of the M1 southbound to be reopened, there were still delays of about 25 minutes in the area. Earlier in the day, drivers on the M4 also experienced delays when one lane on the westbound carriageway, between junctions 1 and 3, was closed after two cars collided. Emergency services, including police, paramedics, and firefighters, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported.

Drivers are advised to drive with caution on Boxing Day due as wet and icy weather conditions in various areas may make driving conditions more challenging.
