NORTHFIELD — Nobody was injured as a result of a two-vehicle crash that stopped traffic at the intersection of Routes 63 and 10 in Northfield Sunday afternoon, according to Northfield Police Officer John Cowan.

The collision was reported at around 12:30 p.m., Cowan said. When emergency responders arrived, three people, one the driver of a gray Toyota Corolla and two who occupied a black Jeep Patriot, were found to have exited their vehicles unassisted. All three declined transport for medical treatment.

Cowan said the collision occurred as the Toyota attempted to turn onto Route 63 north toward New Hampshire while the Jeep was headed south from Route 10 onto Route 63. Solar glare was strong and the Toyota’s driver, a Bernardston resident, “didn’t see the other vehicle in the shadows as he turned,” Cowan said. The vehicles collided, causing the Toyota’s airbags to deploy.

Gene and Carla Tracy, the Jeep’s two occupants and residents of Enfield, Connecticut, said the man driving the Toyota was apologetic and took accountability for the accident.

“He was very nice,” Gene Tracy said. “He said, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t even see you coming out of the shadows there.’”

Responding agencies included Northfield’s Police Department, Fire Department and EMS, as well as the Gill Police Department. Koch’s Automotive towed both vehicles, which received heavy front-end and side damage.

“Everybody here was great,” Gene Tracy said before thanking a passing EMT for his care.

“The response of the cops and EMTs was instantaneous,” Carla Tracy added.

She noted that this care extended beyond just emergency responders.

“Some guy saw the accident and came running up to me because I was standing outside and checked to see if I was alright,” she said. “Our cellphones went flying, so we couldn’t call 911 because we didn’t know where they were, but he did.”

The Tracys said they arranged to be picked up by their daughter after refusing medical transport.

The road, which was blocked off briefly following the accident, was reopened with a detail officer shortly before 1 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation, and no one had been charged criminally as of Sunday afternoon, Cowan said.
