Crashes cause major delays on M61 after traffic stopped on M60



There are major delays on the M61 today following crashes.

Traffic was temporarily stopped after a crash on the nortbound side of the motorway between junction six and eight. Two lanes remain shut with large delays. A collision has also been reported on the southbound carriageway in a similar area.



It comes at the same time as all traffic was stopped on part of the M60 following a ‘police incident’ today.

Vehicles were at a standstill on the anticlockwise carriageway between junction 20 at Blackley and junction 19 at Heaton Park. An update from traffic monitoring system Inrix at 1.15pm said: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to police incident on M60 anticlockwise from J20 A664 Manchester New Road (Higher Blackley) to J19 A576 Middleton Road (Heaton Park Three Arrows Roundabout).

“All traffic held around 13:05.” An image from the scene shows a queue of traffic on the anti-clockwise carriageway while vehicles have been stopped.

Further information on the nature of the incident is yet to be confirmed. Police have been approached for comment.

45-minute delays

Drivers are facing queues of 45 minutes on the M61 northbound, according to National Highways.

Two incidents cleared

Both the M61 southbound and M60 anticlockwise incidents have now cleared, with traffic returned to normal.

Two lanes of the M61 northbound remain closed approaching Rivington Services.

‘Minor injuries’

Lancashire Police has confirmed two crashes took place on the M61 between junctions 6 and 8.

The first, at 1pm, was near to Rivington Services on the northbound carriageway.

One vehicle crashed into the central reservation, with minor injuries reported following the collision.

The second crash took place southbound at 1.18pm, with one vehicle involved.

M61 delays

Drivers are facing queues of 25 minutes northbound following a crash between junctions 6 at Horwich and 8 at Chorley.

Two lanes of the motorway are currently closed, after traffic was stopped for 40 minutes.

Motorists are also facing queues on the same stretch of road, southbound, following a separate collision.

Traffic released

All lanes have now reopened on the M60 but queues remain on the approach.

There are delays of 15 minutes between junctions 19 and 20 anticlockwise.

M61 crash

Drivers are also facing delays on the M61 in both directions, following two crashes.

Traffic stopped

All traffic has been stopped on the M60 anticlockwise near Heaton Park.

North West Motorway Police says the the closure is due to a ‘police incident’.
