High winds across East Tennessee are causing local frustrations but Knoxville was spared the destruction seen overnight across much of the South and Midwest. At least 18 people died as tornadoes touched down in other parts of Tennessee and surrounding states.

In Knoxville, dangerously high winds caused scattered power outages and police warned of traffic issues around the city because signals were down.

About 11% of customers, or about 21,000, are without power across the Knoxville Utility Board’s service area.

KUB said it expects to have power restored around 8 p.m. today in many neighborhoods.

“We are currently in storm mode. Estimation of outages and restoration times are best guesses,” the utility said.

Knoxville police warned drivers to be careful because the winds damaged traffic lights, plus many were inoperable because of the outages.

A high wind advisory from the National Weather Service remains in place until 8 p.m.
