HARTFORD — A crash involving a car and a dump truck on Interstate 91 southbound shut down a ramp and clogged traffic during the morning commute, officials say, and a second crash hours later shut down most of the highway.

The first crash happened about 6:20 a.m. and forced the closure of the entrance ramp at Exit 34, state police said. Minor injuries were reported, state police said. The dump truck was reported to have traveled down an embankment, police said.

Only the right lane of the highway was closed at 7:15 a.m., but traffic headed into Hartford had backed up more than 3 miles, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Troopers said they didn’t know how long part of the highway would be closed and urged drivers to seek alternate routes.

Later in the morning, there was another crash in the same area during which a truck overturned, according to the DOT and police.

According to the state police, the second crash happened about 10:45 a.m. and that, too, may have led to injuries.

All but the HOV lane were shut down, police said.

“We ask that anyone traveling in the area please seek alternate routes and plan for traffic delays,” Trooper First Class Sarah Salerno said Wednesday afternoon.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
