Dumpster truck strikes bridge, snarling rush hour traffic for miles on Route 1 in Saugus

Commuters are facing traffic delays in Saugus after a truck struck a Route 1 overpass Friday morning.

The crash occurred on Route 1 southbound at Walnut Street, closing the two righthand lanes of traffic, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

A piece of equipment on a dumpster truck struck the bridge, NBC10 Boston reported. Photos from the scene show a hole punched into one of the bridge’s metal beams.

The truck driver was taken to a hospital, according to NBC10 Boston. A Massachusetts State Police spokesperson could not immediately be reached for more information on the crash and the driver’s injuries.

Boston.com’s traffic map shows heavy delays stretching north toward Peabody as of 9 a.m. Friday.
