A witness to the deadly three-vehicle accident that closed Route 22 at Route 33 on Thursday morning says he was two cars behind the crash and that he rushed to help the victims after calling 911.

Pennsylvania State Police have confirmed one fatality from the 10:36 a.m. crash that closed 22 eastbound at the 33 interchange into the afternoon. The two other drivers were hospitalized; there was no immediate word on the severity of their injuries.

Photos from the scene showed two smashed pickups below the Route 33 overpass in Bethlehem Township. One was on its side. Another vehicle not far away was covered by a tarp.

Seconds after the crash, Andrew, of Allentown, who declined to provide his last name, said he had called 911 and went from vehicle to vehicle to check on the drivers. Two were moving, he said. One was not.

The scene left him shaken. When he spoke with lehighvalleylive.com about an hour afterward, he had abandoned his planned drive and was heading home.

“I have a 16-month-old at home. I’m on my way home to go hug him,” Andrew said.
