Garbage spills on I-40 West in Durham, creating miles of delays

DURHAM, N.C. — A truck overturned on Interstate 40 on Thursday, spilling garbage on the roadway and closing the westbound direction.

I-40 West were closed before 11:15 a.m. near Exit 283 for Interstate 540. At noon, traffic was slowly squeezing by in the innermost lane, but delays were extensive.

Sky 5 flew over the scene at 11:30 a.m., where trash bags and loose garbage covered multiple lanes.

There were multiple first responders on scene, and traffic backups stretched for miles.

The state Department of Transportation estimated the road may not reopen fully until 2 p.m. due to the extensive cleanup.

Very heavy delays are expected. Drivers should use an alternate route, picking up I-40 West from I-540.
