Grand Central Parkway Closure Snarls Traffic At LaGuardia In Queens
The closure late Friday of Grand Central Parkway near LaGuardia due to police activity trapped drivers and snarled traffic for hours.
QUEENS, NY — Grand Central Parkway was shut down late Friday night in the area of LaGuardia Airport due to a police investigation, causing significant traffic tieups.
The closure appeared to have been related to a shooting at a Gulf Station on Grand Central Parkway, according to postings on the Citizen blog.
A tweet from NYCEM — New York City’s emergency notification system — at 11:19 p.m. said all eastbound lanes of Grand Central Parkway were closed at 111th Street due to police activity and urged drivers to consider alternate routes.
A photo tweeted by Jon Zagrodny, a member of the Darien, Connecticut, Board of Selectmen, showed gridlock in the area.
“Grand Central Parkway at LaGuardia shut down,” he wrote, “30 police cars plus fire trucks and ambulances. Never seen anything like it. Avoid!”
It was unclear how long the closure would be in place. There was no immediate information available from authorities about the shooting.
