Holiday traffic is continuing to cause delays on main routes across the motu today.

As of about 12pm, Waka Kotahi said people travelling north of Auckland on State Highway 1 from Orewa to Puhoi could expect an hour to be added to their travel time due to congestion.

In the south of the city, southbound traffic was also backed up on State Highway 1, through Takanini.

Just after 12pm, Waka Kotahi said several northbound lanes on the south-western State Highway 20 motorway were blocked after an incident.

Those travelling through Silverdale and Wellsford in the city could also expect delays of about 30 minutes through SH1, according to the transport agency’s live traffic updates early on Tuesday afternoon.

Southbound SH1 traffic from Cambridge to Tirau was also seeing delays of about 65 and 75 minutes.

Delays are also being reported on State Highway 29 near Tauranga but congestion is clearing north of Palmerston North following an earlier crash on State Highway 3.

Traffic is heavy south of Christchurch as well, on the southbound lane of State Highway 1 coming into Rakaia.
