The Arizona Department of Transportation released their weekend freeway travel advisory slating a list of closures and restrictions for ongoing improvement projects as well as winter weather-related closures.
Notable closures will be taking place along multiple stretches of northbound Interstate 17, eastbound U.S. 60 and westbound I-10.
Drivers were advised to plan ahead and allow for extra time during their commutes. Traffic conditions can always be checked at az511.gov.
Northbound Interstate 17
Northbound Interstate 17 will be closed between Northern Avenue and Greenway Road for a pavement improvement project.
- On-ramps at Bethany Home Road and Glendale Avenue will be closed.
- Northbound I-17 frontage roads are expected to be closed in the area.
When: 10 p.m. Friday, Jan 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan 23.
Alternate routes: ADOT suggests using northbound State Route 51 and westbound Loop 101 to reach I-17 beyond the closure. Northbound I-17 drivers can also exit ahead of the closure, using northbound 19th or 35th avenues as detours.
Southbound Interstate 17
The southbound I-17 frontage road between McDowell Road and Van Buren Street will be closed for maintenance.
When: 9 p.m. Friday, Jan 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan 23.
Alternate routes: ADOT suggests using southbound 19th or 27th avenues as a detour.
Eastbound U.S. 60
Eastbound U.S. 60 will be closed between Country Club Drive and Gilbert Road for a pavement improvement project. The on-ramps at Dobson and Alma School roads will also be closed.
When: 9 p.m. Friday, Jan 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan 23
Alternate routes: A suggested detour is using eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain or Santan freeways). Drivers can also consider exiting ahead of the closure using eastbound Baseline Road or Southern Avenue to travel past the closure.
Southbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway)
Southbound S.R. 143 will be closed between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and I-10 near Sky Harbor International Airport for a traffic shift, as part of new 48th Street bridge work. The eastbound I-10 off-ramp at 48th Street will also be closed.
When: 10 p.m. Friday, Jan 20, to 4 a.m. Monday, Jan 23.
Alternate routes: ADOT suggests drivers on Loop 202 headed to the airport consider using southbound 44th Street. Westbound Loop 202 drivers that would normally use southbound S.R. 143 to access I-10 can get to eastbound I-10 via the S.R. 51 mini stack. 48th Street can also be accessed by exiting westbound on Baseline Road.
Westbound Interstate 10
The westbound I-10 ramp to eastbound U.S. 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe will be closed for construction. On-ramps at Baseline and Broadway Roads will also be closed. Westbound I-10 is also scheduled to be narrowed to three lanes between Baseline Road and U.S. 60 from 3 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Jan 21.
When: 10 p.m. Friday, Jan 20, to 4 a.m. Monday, Jan 23.
Alternate routes: Westbound I-10 drivers should consider exiting at Broadway Road and making left turns to enter eastbound I-10 to access eastbound U.S. 60.
Eastbound Loop 303
Eastbound Loop 303 will be closed between Lake Pleasant Parkway and Interstate 17 for new interchange construction. I-17 on-ramps at Loop 303 will remain open
When: 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan 21, to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan 22.
Alternate Routes: ADOT suggests using northbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to eastbound State Route 74 to reach I-17.
Winter Weather Closures
With freezing temperatures and snow still falling in northern Arizona, a number of highways were experiencing winter weather closures. Interstate 40 was closed for several hours Friday morning, but later reopened.
State Route 64 was closed between mileposts 242 and 265 near the Grand Canyon.
Drivers were advised to stay up to date on weather conditions and drive safely if travel is absolutely necessary.
