If you or someone you know is in crisis and needs someone to talk to, call the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988.

Interstate 10 was shut down for about four hours Wednesday in Downtown El Paso as police dealt with a person in a reported mental health crisis on a utility bridge over the freeway.

A suicidal man was taken into custody shortly before 1:30 p.m. and I-10 was reopened, police said. Lanes in both directions were blocked during the incident that began before 9:30 a.m. over the freeway next to Stanton Street in Downtown.

Traffic had backed up west past the University of Texas at El Paso and to the area of Piedras Street to the east. Drivers were advised to find alternate routes.

Police blocked off the Downtown bridges over I-10 and directed traffic, which backed up in the area.

The potentially life-threatening situation is considered a “jumper call out,” involving specially-trained members of the police Crisis Management Team, the Special Weapons and Tactics team and the Combined Search and Rescue, or ComSAR, mountain rescue team.
