And last week she marked her birthday by raising a cuppa and glass of fizz with her care home pals, admitting she had a “jolly good time”.

Widow Edna added: “I’ve lived a long time haven’t I? The secret to long life is I have always had good food and a good appetite.

“My mother always gave me good food — I’ve never been hungry — and also my poetry. I’ve always loved poetry.”

Edna, née Dobson, was born on October 9, 1916.

She married Clifford Walmsley and together they raised three children — Andrew, Adrienne and Alyson.

She also has three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

A former school cook, Edna has lived to see five monarchs — George V, Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth II and now King Charles III.

She loves travel and reading and can still recite poems she learned at school.

Edna enjoyed yoga into her late 90s and spent all her life in Great Harwood, Lancs, until she moved into Pendle Brook care home in nearby Oswaldtwistle in 2021.

Claire Rothwell, the activity coordinator at the home, said today: “Edna has an amazing long-term memory, a keen eye and sense of humour and she is an absolute pleasure to be with.”
