Liberty Bridge closed to traffic due to malfunction
BAY CITY, MI — For the second day in a row, drivers in Bay City had to contend with malfunctioning draw bridges.
At 1:18 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, a BAY Alert was issued stating that the Liberty Bridge was malfunctioning. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route.
Currently, the Veterans Memorial, Independence and Lafayette Street bridges are open.
According to the alert, police were preparing to re-route traffic away from the bridge.
This closure comes on the heels of yesterday’s Lafayette Street Bridge closure. Shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, the Lafayette Bridge was closed after it malfunctioned due to an electrical problem.
During the Lafayette Bridge closure, a tan and red freighter sat in the shipping channel waiting for it to open. The ship successfully passed through after 5:30 p.m., and the bridge was reopened about 6:45 p.m.
The same ship successfully made it out of the Saginaw River and towards the Saginaw Bay before the Liberty Bridge malfunctioned on Thursday.
The Liberty Bridge is operated by Bay City Bridge Partners, the private company that has been rehabilitating the structure. The Lafayette Street Bridge is owned and operated by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
