Dearborn police were called to the scene of a fatal traffic collision at about 8:45 a.m. Dec. 26.
The crash happened at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Gulley.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and we offer our condolences to the victim’s family and friends. I ask that anyone who may have witnessed the collision to please contact the Dearborn Police Department,” Dearborn Police Cmr. Timothy McHale said.
A preliminary investigation shows that a Wayne County Sheriff’s Department officer had tried to initiate a traffic stop on a white Ford Econoline van, which refused to stop.
The van continued driving at a high rate of speed and proceeded through a red light at Gulley, striking a Chevrolet Trax traveling northbound on Gulley.
The driver of the Trax, a 61-year-old woman from Lincoln Park, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the van fled on foot but was apprehended a short distance away by police officers.
The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending formal charges from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
