Anjelina Rodriguez lost her mother during a tragic accident Jan. 19 when the woman was struck by a truck in Lorain and succumbed to her injuries.
To make matters even worse for the young woman, she’s now facing becoming homeless this week.
Rodriguez organized a GoFundMe Account with a goal of $10,000 to help with memorial costs for her mother, Rosemary Santiago, as well as to start supporting herself.
“I am freshly 18, I had no one other than my mother who was financial and physically supporting me and am now in a situation we’re I am losing my home by the end of the week and on the verge of going homeless and I’m losing all hope of life,” Rodriguez stated in the GoFundMe account posted on Facebook.
Santiago, 60, a mother of seven children, was shopping for a specific brand of soap and dinner at Dollar General, 1673 E. 28th St., her daughter said.
As Santiago left the store and was walking south crossing East 28th Street, outside of any crosswalks, a 33-year-old Lorain man was traveling east in the 1600 block of East 28th Street when his 2019 Dodge pickup truck struck Santiago, throwing her approximately 100 feet, according to a Lorain police report.
Rodriguez talked about her mother with love as well as sadness Jan. 23 as she remembered the kind acts her mother frequently helped others with.
“She was always trying to look out for other people; she was really nice,” Rodriguez said.
Santiago and Rodriguez were planning a trip to New Jersey where the two had made plans for an adventure outside of Rodriguez’s hometown of Lorain.
“She had a lot of goals for the future; it’s just a shame,” Rodriguez said.
For example, Santiago was in search of her birth certificate which was in New Jersey where she was born, her daughter said.
Without the birth certificate, Santiago couldn’t even get her ears pierced because she didn’t have the document, Rodriguez said.
The two wanted to move to New Jersey, she said.
The Lorain Police Department is continuing its investigation into the accident.
Thus far, Rodriguez has received $570 in donations to help get her back on her feet as well as hold a memorial for her mother.
