BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. — Two New York residents had 120 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle during a traffic stop in North Jersey, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Xian Fang Mei, 62, and Xian Wei Tang, 39, both of Queens, New York, were traveling through Bergen County on Wednesday and were stopped by officers from the Prosecutor’s Offices Narcotic Task Force, officials said.
Officers found 120 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle and charged Mei and Tang with first-degree possession with intent to distribute marijuana over 25 pounds, authorities said.
Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation in Feb. 2021 making it legal for anyone age 21 or older to possess up to six ounces of marijuana. Licensed dispensaries throughout the state were authorized to start selling recreational cannabis in April 2022.
The Prosecutor’s Office did not say which Bergen County town the stop occurred in.
They were both released pending a first appearance in county court.
