Traffic congestion was reported on Delhi-Gurgaon expressway during peak office hours Tuesday as a stretch on National Highway-48 (Delhi-Jaipur highway) between Rangpuri and Rajokri was shut for vehicles by Delhi traffic police as part of a trial.

Officials said both carriageways of NH-48, on the stretch between Rangpuri and Rajokri, will be closed for 90 days to facilitate the construction of two underpasses and a flyover for the Dwarka expressway project, which is being planned as an alternative route to connect Delhi and Gurgaon.

A Delhi Police spokesperson said the trial of carriageway closure on the stretch was conducted on Tuesday to assess the traffic movement on slip roads and diversions. “By Friday, the carriageway will be closed from both sides. Today, we had closed one of the carriageways and created diversions on Palam Road, Mehrauli-Gurgaon road, Dwarka flyover and other routes. There was a slight delay in travel from Dhaula Kuan to Rajokri,” the spokesperson said.

The Delhi Police said traffic congestion was witnessed from Dhaula Kuan towards Gurgaon and there was a delay of over 39 minutes till Rajokri. The Mahipalpur bypass road was also congested due to the ongoing construction work, added police.

An advisory issued by Delhi traffic police stated, “The National Highway Authority of India is constructing the Dwarka expressway… which will start from Dwarka Link Road near Shiv Murti on NH-48,” it added.

The advisory added that traffic near Shiv Murti intersection shall be diverted from the main highway to newly-constructed slip roads. “People going towards Airport/ISBT/railway stations are advised to carefully plan their travel with sufficient time at hand,” said the advisory.

An NHAI official said, “There are two four-lane diversions on the left side for commuters going from Delhi to Gurgaon. So, traffic, which is usually heavy during peak hours, is being negotiated through these. Since it was the first day of trial, there was some traffic congestion. In the evening, diversion was also operationalised from Gurgaon to Delhi side.”

Meanwhile, Gurgaon Police said they are coordinating with their counterparts in Delhi amidst fears of snarls on both sides of the expressway in the coming days.

Shiv Archan, ACP traffic Gurgaon (Highway), said, “Traffic movement remained unaffected largely on the Gurgaon side. Traffic will be diverted to the slip roads. We have increased deployment. We have held meetings with Delhi Police and are coordinating with them. A traffic advisory will be issued for Gurgaon residents.”
