NEW SEWICKLEY TWP. – As work continues along Freedom Road, local police and state officials are urging motorists to practice safety when traveling through the road’s new roundabout.
Members of PennDOT and the New Sewickley Township Police Department are urging motorists to use extra caution when traveling through the roundabout that now connects Freedom Road and Route 989. The road, which reopened to motorists last fall, was revamped in an attempt to alleviate traffic and make the intersection safer for drivers.
“Roundabouts are a great solution to reducing traffic congestion and speeding, and we are glad to have one at this intersection,” said Greg Carney, chief of the New Sewickley Township Police Department. “Now that the roundabout is open, we’re happy to be partnering with PennDOT to educate motorists on how to properly navigate through it, for everyone’s safety.”
The roundabout, which has multiple lanes of traffic going around the circular island, can be confusing for some drivers experiencing the complex roadway for the first time. Similar to the single-lane roadway structure in the middle of Rochester, the popular intersection along Freedom Road sees a large amount of daily traffic and can require some prior knowledge of roundabouts to safely navigate.
Officials urge motorists in the area to review PennDOT’s roundabout safety information on its Tube channel to get a refresher on how to navigate the structure correctly. Residents can also contact New Sewickley police with any questions they may have about the road.
The addition of the roundabout was a part of the $21.7 million Freedom Road Upgrade project, which aims to add various improvements to the popular road. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
