Power line project expected to slow traffic on US 30 Thursday night

BUCYRUS — Traffic on U.S. 30 will be intermittently delayed Thursday night and early Friday as crews install new power lines across the highway.
The Ohio Highway Patrol will conduct a rolling roadblock, according to Jette Cander, director of the Crawford County Emergency Management Agency.
Crews working for American Electric Power have been replacing transmission lines and poles between Bucyrus and Shelby for several months. The project involves rebuilding about 15 miles of power line and building about 10 miles of new power line, an AEP spokeswoman said previously. The lines cross U.S. 30 at two points east of Ohio 602.
Sgt. Brian Kelley of the Bucyrus post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said traffic will be slowed or halted intermittently between roughly 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Kelley that while he hasn’t been directly involved with planning for the rolling roadblock, he anticipates no more than slight delays for drivers on U.S. 30 those evenings. “Otherwise, they would have alternate routes set up through ODOT,” he said, referring to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
“Typically … what will happen is the troopers will perhaps start some distance east and some distance west from the actual location where they’re running the cables, and then what they’ll do is, with their lights activated, they’ll start to slow traffic down to something like 5 miles an hour, and then they’ll continue rolling in the direction they started with,” he said. “Once the road is basically shut off, the company will run their cables across and get them up to a safe height, where it’s not going to impede traffic, and then they’ll open it back up again.”
Traffic will not be detoured, he explained.
“It’s not like 30’s going to be shut down the entire night,” Kelley said. “Each time they run a cable across, they’re going to do that maneuver, so that they can safely run it across and not impede traffic.”
On Wednesday, Middletown Road was closed between Ohio 598 and Crestline Road as part of the same project.
