Storm disrupts Valley power, traffic for second consecutive Saturday

An ambulance crew member surveys the damage from a tree that was downed blocking traffic on South Turner Road in Austintown around 1 p.m. Saturday. Another large tree blocked traffic on the same roadway further south around the same time. First responders stood by, but no one was injured.

For the second consecutive Saturday, heavy storms and winds ripped through the Mahoning Valley downing trees and power lines, and causing widespread power outages.

Ohio Edison is reporting over 60,000 customers without power in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties after the storm with heavy lightning, winds and rain swept through the Valley around 1 p.m. today.

In Austintown, downed trees blocked thoroughfares including South Turner Road. Firefighters blocked state Route 46 south of New Road after heavy winds cracked a utility pole. The pole, with power lines still attached, waved in the heavy winds.

Power also was out at the Austintown Plaza where workers gathered around 1:30 p.m. on the sidewalk in front of their dark stores.

Boardman was reported as among the hardest hit areas, with more than 4,000 reported power outages.
