Motorists in downtown Vancouver might want to avoid the waterfront area near Coal Harbour on Friday due to road closures necessary for a helicopter to hoist signage for the Shaw Tower.

The 41-storey Shaw Tower, on the corner of Cordova and Thurlow Streets, is getting its existing signs replaced with Rogers signage after Rogers Communications Inc.’s $26-billion acquisition of Shaw cleared final regulatory hurdles last month.

“Due to the height of the building and limited ground-level accessibility, a helicopter is needed for the removal and installation of the signs,” the largest of which weighs just under 1,500 lbs., said the City of Vancouver in a bulletin on Thursday.

Road closures are scheduled for Friday and next Thursday, June 1, for these streets:

• 200-block Thurlow Street from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

• 1000-block West Waterfront Road from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The 1000-block of Cordova Street will remain open, but motorists should expect intermittent closures when the helicopter flies overhead.

The closures will allow the helicopter to transport the four pieces of the existing Shaw sign to a staging area in Coal Harbour over eight flights. On June 1, the helicopter will make 12 trips to hoist six pieces of signage to the tower.

Each flight will take 10 to 15 minutes and will take two to three hours in total.

There will be access to residences and businesses during the operation, but residents may hear intermittent noise from the helicopter, said the city. Sidewalk access and parking may also be affected.

Vancouver police will be onsite to direct traffic.

Drivers are asked to follow “no parking” signs in the area and expect delays.
