Traffic Fatality Investigation in the Westover Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, December 27, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Westover Division.

 

Shortly after 8:30 a.m., officers were alerted of a License Plate Reader hit for a vehicle that was associated with an Armed Robbery. Officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver refused to pull over and a vehicle pursuit ensued as this was a vehicle associated with a crime dangerous to life. Stop Sticks were deployed on West Boulevard. Subsequently, the suspect vehicle crashed near the intersection of West Boulevard and Romare Bearden Drive. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased on scene and the passenger was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Major Crash Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, CMPD’s Armed Robbery Unit, CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team, Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted.

As is standard procedure, the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation. The five officers directly involved in the incident were placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
