MURRIETA, CA — High winds that began overnight in Murrieta downed trees across the city and wreaked havoc for Monday morning commuters.
Whitewood Road was closed Monday morning in both directions from Los Alamos Road to Alta Murrieta and even further toward Highbury Drive, according to the Murrieta Police Department.
“Large TREES were blown over taking over the entire roadway of numerous intersections. Crews are on-scene making every effort to get at least one lane open in each direction this morning but we have no guarantees,” the agency reported via social media.
Along the busy roadway, downed trees were located at
•Avenida Acacias
•Willowbend Drive
•Via Monserate
•Alta Murrieta
•Highbury Drive

No injuries were immediately reported.
According to the National Weather Service, the high wind warning remains in effect through 4 p.m. Monday. Northeast winds were blowing 30 to 40 mph with gusts of 50 to 70 mph, the agency reported.
Additionally, the city is under an air quality alert due to elevated particulate matter levels from windblown dust, according to the NWS.
